watershed assessment and restoration

trout creek, wisconsin

Brook trout were once common in Trout Creek near Green Bay, but recent agricultural and urban development pressures have led to the degradation of the stream. The Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin retained Inter-Fluve to:
1) complete a comprehensive assessment of the geomorphic stability of the stream; 2) make recommendations; and 3) assist in implementing those recommendations. Included in the study was the evaluation of sediment transport and channel stability, Rosgen classification, quantification of fish habitat and identification of problem areas. The first on-the-ground projects focus on a headwater to mouth direction and were completed in 2003. These included wetland restoration and natural channel design and restoration of 2000 feet of Trout Creek headwaters. The project featured single pass construction through floodplain forests resulting in minimal disturbance (see photo above and middle). A second project featured large woody debris installation to reduce stream power and create fish habitat (bottom right)

"We were very satisfied with the quality of service provided by Inter-fluve on this project. Extra effort was given in an enthusiastic manner to both ensure the project was a success and to educate the crew in proper stream building techniques.

The project remains a showplace on the proper way to restore a headwater tributary. We gladly recommend Inter-fluve and plan to use their services ourselves as we move our restoration efforts downstream in this system."
