integrated streambank protection guidelines
state of washington
Inter-Fluve assisted the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Department of Transportation, and Department of Ecology with the development of their Integrated Streambank Protection Guidelines. This statewide document is a tool for establishing acceptable approaches, methods, and techniques for stream and riverbank stabilization in light of the Endangered Species Act in the State of Washington.
The Integrated Streambank Protection Guidelines were prepared for a wide audience, such as WDFW staff who review Hydraulic Permit Applications for bank protection projects, engineers from the public and private sectors who design bank protection projects, and planners and policy decision-makers. The goal of the guidelines is to provide advice to guide actions in response to eroding stream and riverbanks.
Further, the guidelines are intended to foster an understanding of river processes so that designs prescribed work with the river rather than against it. The document provides guidance on how to assess why a bank is failing, identify habitat and risk considerations, and select the most appropriate bank protection technique. In essence, the guidelines provide a framework for a decision-making process that integrates habitat, risk, and cause of failure in order to develop a successful bank protection solution.
